Paul Jonathan Saguil’s article, titled “Hate Crime or Freedom of Speech?“, appears in the first issue of the Ontario Bar Association’s new official magazine, Just., launched in June 2012. Just. is the voice of the OBA and its members, shedding light on industry developments and providing a wide range of new perspectives on legal news in Ontario. Paul’s article discusses Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission v. Whatcott, a case heard by the Supreme Court of Canada in October 2011 that raises important questions regarding the limits of freedom of expression, the scope of freedom of religion and equality rights, and the role of human rights commissions in regulating the exercise and enjoyment of these rights. Paul and Phil Tunley were counsel to one of the interveners, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, in the appeal before the SCC.
