Stockwoods lawyer Brendan van Niejenhuis, along with co-counsel Scott Hutchison, succeeded in defending the City of Windsor and Town of Tecumseh against allegations that they were in contempt of a January 29 court order. The underlying order precluded the municipalities from continuing to advertise their “Opt-Out Campaign”, seeking to raise awareness about a major class action against them brought on behalf of charitable organizations that conducted licensed bingo and other lottery events dating back to 1993. In reasons released April 14, Justice Patterson concluded that subsequent communications made public after his order was granted did not amount to acts of contempt.
