A landmark jury verdict was delivered today at the coroner’s inquest into the death of Soleiman Faqiri. Soleiman died on December 15, 2016, while on remand at the Central East Correctional Centre. His death was the result of prone position restraint and other factors endured during a violent use of force against him by numerous prison guards.
The inquest jury returned a verdict of homicide along with 57 recommendations for government reforms intended to prevent future deaths from occurring in similar circumstances. This verdict has been seven years in the making for the Faqiri family and is the first time that Soleiman’s death has been publicly recognized and declared as a killing.
Our partners Nader Hasan and Ted Marrocco act for the Faqiri family. Congratulations to Ted and Nader and their Stockwoods team which includes Geri Angelova and Fox Scholar Robyn Bower-Morris.
