Stockwoods secures acquittal of Ornge in charges arising from tragic 2013 helicopter crash

Stockwoods lawyers Brian Gover and Fredrick Schumann successfully represented Ontario’s provincial air ambulance service, Ornge, in defending charges under the Canada Labour Code. The trial lasted for three weeks in spring 2017. The charges pertained to the tragic 2013 crash of a helicopter near Moosonee, Ontario, in which two pilots and two paramedics lost their lives. Fourteen of the seventeen counts were withdrawn before or during trial, and, today, Ornge was acquitted of the three remaining counts. The trial judge, Mr Justice Bruce Duncan of the Ontario Court of Justice, concluded that Ornge had not compromised pilot safety by centralizing pilot scheduling and pairing, and that Ornge had acted with due diligence in relation to the provision of night-vision goggles for the helicopter in question.
