CBC’s the fifth estate and The National are this week broadcasting the results of their investigation into the detention and torture of Canadians Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad Abou-Elmaati and Muayyed Nureddin by the Syrian government, focusing particularly on the actions of Canadian officials and their active involvement in these events. On September 19, the first of a three part investigative series aired on The National and is now available to view here. This Thursday evening, the entire documentary will be released and viewable on the fifth estate‘s YouTube channel.
Since 2008, a team of Stockwoods lawyers has acted as counsel for these three torture victims in their action against the Canadian government seeking compensation for this mistreatment, which was the subject of a report by the Hon. Frank Iacobucci released in 2008. A 2009 motion passed in the House of Commons called upon the Government of Canada to apologize and provide compensation, and a similar call was issued by the United Nations Committee Against Torture in 2012.
The litigation continues and is scheduled for trial in 2017.
