Legislation Introduced to Limit Canada Post Exclusive Privilege

On October 29, 2007, the Minister of Transport introduced Bill C-14 in the House of Commons.  Bill C-14 would amend the Canada Post Corporation Act to permit international-destined letters to be handled by private operators.  The new legislation follows a series of Ontario court actions brought by Canada Post asserting a right to injunctive relief against international mailers, which had been operating in Canada since the 1980s.  Since 2004, Stockwoods lawyers Brian Gover and Brendan Van Niejenhuis have acted for targets of the Canada Post litigation, including Spring Canada and Key Mail Canada, in defending the proceedings.
