Stockwoods lawyers Gerald Chan and Zachary Rosen appeared this morning as counsel for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) in an important appeal dealing with general warrants in s. 487.01 of the Criminal Code. This case (R. v. Bhatti) will address the proper approach that the courts should take to the interpretation of warrants issued under this exceptionally broad police power, which has been resorted to for a wide range of police techniques. This police power will become increasingly important for digital privacy as the police incorporate AI tools into their investigative work. The Court reserved its judgment after hearing submissions from the parties and the CCLA as the sole intervener.
